Highland Council ATS-TARP Static
Location: Inverness
The Highland Council required a wet waste treatment facility in Inverness, to receive and treat the waste from their gully emptiers and road-sweepers. Up to four loads of 5,700 litres each were to be discharged daily. As the gully emptiers and road-sweepers returned each day to the Council’s Longman site in Inverness, it was decided to locate the treatment facility at this depot.
Apsu proposed its ATS-TARP (Treatment and Recycling Plant) Static solution. The unit was installed in December 2009. The installation was completed by Apsu within a period of four weeks on site. The ATS-TARP-Static has met all the Council’s requirements while occupying only a small footprint: less than 250m².
The installation accepts and contains the wet waste discharge from the vehicles (either tipped or pumped), and de-waters the solids. The resulting liquid is treated via an Advanced Treatment Station (ATS) to remove contamination by hydrocarbons and heavy metals, and to produce decontaminated water of a quality suitable for washing down and recycling. Storage is provided for the recycled water, as well as a pumping facility to wash down the delivery bay, and to wash out and refill the gully emptiers and road-sweepers. The infrastructure of the installation includes a concrete delivery bay, the ATS, a washbay for the washing down of vehicles, all associated access ramps, roadways, parking areas and washbay facilities (draining back in to the ATS-TARP Static), as well as gantries, underground pipework, electricity supply and lighting.
Richard Guest, The Highland Council’s Head of Roads and Community Works, said: “We are delighted that Apsu has developed a system which will not only cut down on the amount of our waste going to landfill but will also reduce our operating costs. This very much reinforces the Council’s commitment to cut our carbon footprint and increase the amount of waste we recycle.”
